The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has released the name of the individual who was killed by a SWAT officer during a standoff that took place on Saturday in Hall County. The man has been identified as David James Umpmreyville, a 57-year-old resident of Flowery Branch.
According to initial reports, Hall County deputies were dispatched to a domestic dispute at approximately 6:45 a.m. on November 11th in the 6500 block of Samoa Way in Flowery Branch. A distressed 911 caller stated that she had been assaulted by her husband during the dispute and that he had prevented her from leaving the house. Eventually, she managed to escape and seek refuge at a neighbor’s home.
Upon arrival, Hall County deputies engaged in communication with Umpmreyville inside the residence. The GBI’s news release states that Umpmreyville was uncooperative and belligerent towards the deputies, refusing to comply with their requests and refusing to leave the house.
After about two hours, the deputies requested the assistance of the Hall County SWAT team. The SWAT members established a perimeter around the house and initiated negotiations with Umpmreyville, attempting to persuade him to exit the residence peacefully.
During the course of the standoff, investigators have determined that Umpmreyville emerged from the house twice, completely nude, and on one occasion, he was armed with a firearm. He proceeded to fire multiple shots from the back door and windows of the home. Moreover, Umpmreyville allegedly made threats to shoot at law enforcement officers if they attempted to enter the house.
When Umpmreyville aimed his firearm in the direction of a deputy positioned on the perimeter of the property, the deputy discharged their weapon in an attempt to neutralize the threat. However, the shot did not strike Umpmreyville. Subsequently, Umpmreyville moved to a window within the house and once again pointed his firearm at the deputies. In response, a deputy fired at Umpmreyville, resulting in his death at the scene.
The GBI will conduct an independent investigation into the incident, and upon its completion, the findings will be submitted to the Hall County District Attorney’s Office for review. This particular case marks the 89th officer-involved shooting that the GBI has been called upon to investigate in 2023.
