The Mangaluru city police have taken steps to designate specific areas as silence zones, in response to concerns raised by the public about the use of loud horns. City Police Commissioner Anupam Agrawal has announced that DCP (Crime and Traffic) BP Dinesh Kumar has already begun working towards this goal. One of the identified silence zones will be located near the Government Lady Goschen Hospital.
Agrawal stated that a total of 10 areas, including residential neighborhoods, hospitals, old age homes, schools, and colleges, will be officially recognized as silence zones. This initiative aims to reduce noise pollution and create more peaceful environments in these areas.
During a one-hour phone-in program, Commissioner Agrawal received a total of 32 calls from the public, addressing various issues such as footpath encroachments, traffic problems, incomplete bus trips, and overcharging by prepaid autorickshaws at railway stations.
In response to a caller who claimed to have been cheated in a holiday package scam, the police commissioner instructed the ACP to gather information from hotels that organize such promotional events. He emphasized the importance of hotels informing the police in advance about such events so that the police can verify the legitimacy of the agencies offering these packages.
Regarding the issue of footpath encroachments, Commissioner Agrawal announced that a “footpath for pedestrian” campaign will be held in the city after the Deepavali festival, with the support of the Mangaluru City Corporation. This campaign aims to clear the footpaths of any obstructions and ensure that pedestrians have safe and accessible walkways. Additionally, the commissioner assured that he will address the concerns raised about bus operations at Akrabail by speaking to the bus owners.
Overall, the Mangaluru city police are taking proactive measures to address public concerns and improve the quality of life for residents. The designation of silence zones and the planned campaigns against footpath encroachments demonstrate their commitment to creating a peaceful and pedestrian-friendly environment in the city..
