Ottawa: Indian-origin Man and Son Shot Dead in Canada in Gang Violence Escalation
An Indian-origin man and his 11-year-old son were tragically shot dead in what the police have labeled as a shocking and disturbing rise in gang violence within Edmonton, a city in Canada. The man, identified as Harpreet Singh Uppal, aged 41, along with his son, were fatally shot outside a gas station on Thursday, according to the authorities.
Fortunately, a friend of the boy who was also present at the scene managed to escape unharmed. “Mr Uppal was deliberately pursued with the intention of locating him and putting an end to his life. And unfortunately, it happened,” stated Edmonton police Acting Superintendent Colin Derksen, as reported by The Guardian. Derksen further added, “Regarding the young boy, his son… we cannot ascertain if he was specifically targeted. What we do know is that once the shooter or shooters discovered the presence of the son, they intentionally took his life… He was not caught in the crossfire or mistakenly killed. This is an act of extreme cruelty and perversion.”
The police have refrained from disclosing the name of the son, citing that it is still too early to identify the boy, as mentioned in the report. Derksen shared that a suspect vehicle, a stolen 2012 BMW X6, was found ablaze north of Beaumont. However, no individuals were found inside the vehicle, and there were no reported injuries resulting from the fire.
Officials revealed that Uppal was already known to the police and had previously been shot and wounded in an attack at a pizza restaurant earlier in 2021. According to a report by news agency PTI, Uppal was facing charges related to cocaine possession and trafficking, as well as illegal possession of body armor. When questioned about whether the police believed this shooting was in retaliation for other acts of violence, or if they anticipated retaliation for Uppal’s killing, Derksen declined to comment.
