Seven students from a prestigious engineering college in Coimbatore, India, were recently arrested for their involvement in a ragging incident. The victim, a second-year student at PSG College of Technology, was allegedly subjected to physical assault and forced to remove his clothes by the seven perpetrators. The incident took place in the college hostel.
Furthermore, the victim’s head was shaved by the group of students from Tirupur. The incident came to light when the victim informed his parents, who promptly lodged a police complaint on Tuesday night. As soon as the police complaint was filed, the college authorities took immediate action and suspended the seven students involved.
The names of the arrested students are Ram Santhosh, B Naveen alias Yalish, A Mohamed Dilparshah, G Dharanidharan, B Iyappan, S Manikandan, and P Nithyanandarajan. Among them, two are second-year students, one is a third-year student, and the rest are final-year students.
According to the police, the victim, who resided in the college hostel, was confronted by the seven students on Monday evening. They demanded money from him to purchase alcohol. When he refused, they physically assaulted him and took him to the room of one of the seniors. Inside the room, they forcefully stripped him and shaved his head. Despite his resistance, two students restrained his hands while the others proceeded with the head-shaving.
After being released in the early hours of Tuesday, the victim immediately reported the incident to his friends. He then contacted his parents, who traveled to Coimbatore. Together, they went to the Peelamedu police station to file a formal complaint.
The police have charged the seven students with various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including assault, criminal force, criminal intimidation, and wrongful confinement. Additionally, they have been charged under the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Ragging Act, 1997, which carries a maximum penalty of two years of imprisonment. A police officer stated that a thorough investigation would be conducted.
