A 19-year-old student named Bernard Stapelfeld was found dead in Frederickson Hall at James Madison University at around 2:30 a.m. on Thursday morning. The university’s police called for an investigation by the Virginia State Police’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation. The news was confirmed by the student-run newspaper “The Breeze” and an Instagram post by JMU Borderline, a club that Stapelfeld was a member of. The club expressed their sadness and offered support to anyone who wanted to share memories of Stapelfeld. Stapelfeld was a finance major and an honors student. Officials have stated that the death is not suspicious and there is no ongoing safety threat on campus. The Virginia State Police is currently investigating the incident. In response to the student’s passing, the university will be providing support services for students, faculty, and staff. A vigil is also being planned for Stapelfeld’s friends and family.
