Heroic NYPD Officers Save Man Who Fell Onto Subway Tracks in Queens
QUEENS, New York (WABC) — In a heart-stopping incident captured on video, a man fell onto the subway tracks at the 90th Street and Roosevelt Avenue station in Queens. Fortunately, two brave New York Police Department (NYPD) officers, Jonathan Valle and David Canarte, were nearby and were able to quickly respond to the emergency.
Officer Valle and Officer Canarte, who had just completed their training at the police academy two years ago, were assigned to the Mobile Force Field Post at the station when they witnessed the man falling off the platform and onto the tracks of the southbound 7 train.
According to Officer Valle, they noticed the man walking dangerously close to the edge of the platform when suddenly, he lost his balance and fell onto the tracks. Realizing the imminent danger, the officers rushed to the scene to assess the situation.
As they reached the tracks, they attempted to communicate with the man, but he was unresponsive. With a No. 7 train approaching just a minute away, the officers knew they had to act quickly to save the man’s life.
Officer Valle courageously jumped onto the tracks, while Officer Canarte tried to grab the attention of the train engineer to stop the approaching train. Canarte signaled the train, unsure if the engineer saw him, but knowing they had less than a minute to rescue the man.
With the help of a compassionate bystander, Officer Valle managed to lift the victim and hand him over to Officer Canarte, who was waiting on the platform. Canarte then pulled the man to safety, with both officers and the good Samaritan quickly climbing back onto the platform just before the train arrived at the station.
The victim, a 23-year-old resident of the Bronx, was immediately taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Thankfully, due to the swift actions and teamwork of the brave officers, a tragedy was averted.
Officer Canarte expressed his gratitude for being able to help someone in need, stating that it is the duty of every officer who wears the police shield on their chest. He emphasized that their primary goal is to provide assistance and save lives.
This remarkable incident serves as a testament to the bravery and dedication of the NYPD officers who put their lives on the line every day to protect and serve the community.
