Drug Cartel Busted in Delhi’s Yamuna Floodplain Area
Express News Service
In a significant breakthrough in the fight against the prevalent drug menace in Delhi, particularly in the Yamuna floodplain area, the Delhi Police have successfully dismantled a major drug cartel. This cartel consisted of a NashaMukti Kendra (addiction treatment center), a medical store, and eight suppliers along with their associates. These criminals were involved in supplying illicit drugs to vulnerable addicts.
The Lieutenant Governor, V K Saxena, who has been actively involved in the Yamuna rejuvenation projects, overseen by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) constituted High-Level Committee, personally witnessed instances of drug trafficking and abuse in the area. Concerned about the situation, he instructed the Police Commissioner, Sanjay Arora, to take immediate action to address the issue.
The Special Commissioner of Police (crime branch), Ravindra Singh Yadav, disclosed that the Anti-Narcotic Task Force (ANTF) and Delhi Police (North District), in collaboration with the Drug Departments of Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, launched an operation to eradicate drug peddlers from the Yamuna floodplains.
As part of this operation, the police conducted raids on the premises of Elegant Clinic, a NashaMukti Kendra located in the Jahangirpuri area. The in-charge of the clinic, named Pradeep, was found to be involved in drug trafficking. An investigation into the clinic’s registers and drug inventory revealed that Pradeep was stealing drugs based on the Aadhar cards of addicts undergoing treatment at the center. He then sold these drugs to trafficking gangs at inflated prices, who in turn distributed them to addicts and vagabonds in various areas of the Yamuna floodplain such as Hanuman Mandir, Chatta Rail, ISBT, Yamuna Bazar, and Nigam Bodh Ghat.
In a joint survey conducted by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS), it was found that drug abuse is more prevalent in the national capital region compared to the national average.
The Delhi Police are determined to eradicate this menace completely. As of October 15th this year, they have arrested 1468 drug offenders in connection with 1144 Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) cases. On average, four drug traffickers are apprehended every day in the city. Additionally, a significant amount of illicit substances has been seized, including 62.639 kg of heroin or smack, 15.318 kg of cocaine, 2,802.293 kg of ganja or marijuana, 377.914 kg of opium, 77.370 kg of charas or hashish, and 346.372 kg of poppy head.
