An incident in Jerusalem has resulted in the tragic death of a young American-Israeli Border Police officer, Sgt. Rose Elisheva Lubin. On November 6, 2023, Lubin and her colleague were attacked in a suspected terror stabbing near the Herod’s Gate entrance to Jerusalem’s Old City. Lubin was critically injured and despite being rushed to the hospital, she was pronounced dead. Another officer was also wounded in the attack. The assailant, a 16-year-old from Isawiya—a Palestinian neighborhood in East Jerusalem—was shot dead by other police officers at the scene, and another suspect believed to have aided the killer was arrested.
Lubin, who grew up in Dunwoody, Georgia, immigrated to Israel in August 2021. In March 2022, she joined the Border Police for obligatory service. Described as loved by her colleagues, courageous, and always willing to volunteer for missions, Lubin was known for her professionalism, ethical behavior, and friendly nature. The Israeli police have expressed their support for her grieving family and stated that they will accompany them forever.
Former U.S. ambassador to Israel, David Friedman, shared a video on social media featuring Lubin and her cousin exchanging Shabbat greetings. Expressing his sorrow, Friedman highlighted Lubin’s journey as an American citizen who became a “lone soldier” and member of the border police. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp also expressed his condolences to the Lubin family, praising her courage and commitment to fighting evil.
The incident comes at a time when Israeli-Palestinian tensions remain high, with Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza entering its second month. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has insisted on a cease-fire only if Hamas releases all of its hostages, while Hamas demands that Israel stops its assault on Gaza before releasing the hostages. Currently, Hamas holds over 200 hostages, including at least 10 U.S. citizens.
The tragic death of Sgt. Rose Elisheva Lubin serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle against terror and the importance of supporting Israel in its fight against such attacks..
