A suspect has been taken into custody following a fatal shooting outside of a Fareway Meat and Grocery store in Monticello, Iowa. The incident occurred on Tuesday morning when officers from the Monticello Police Department received a report of a shooting with a victim at the Fareway on North Farley Street. Upon arrival, emergency responders discovered a 48-year-old man named Aaron McAtee, who worked at the store, outside with a gunshot wound. McAtee was promptly transported to the hospital but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities have classified the shooting as a “random act of violence,” and they have identified 38-year-old Nathan Russell as a person of interest in their investigation. A deputy from Delaware County later located Russell in the nearby town of Hopkinton and attempted to apprehend him. However, Russell allegedly failed to comply with the deputy’s orders, leading the deputy to shoot him. Russell was subsequently taken to a hospital for treatment of his injuries.
The Monticello Police Department, Iowa Division of Criminal Investigations, Jones County Sheriff’s Office, and Delaware County Sheriff’s Office are all actively involved in the ongoing investigation into this tragic incident.
