Fatal Crash Claims Life of Man on Kauai
On Sunday, tragedy struck Kauai as a fatal crash claimed the life of a man, marking the fourth traffic-related fatality on the island this year. The incident occurred at approximately 2:45 p.m. on Kaumuali’i Highway near mile-marker 6. According to the police, a man was driving a Toyota Tacoma heading east on Kaumuali’i Highway when he collided with the back of a Nissan Sentra.
Fortunately, the driver of the Sentra, a 62-year-old man from Washington, and his passenger escaped the accident unharmed. However, the Tacoma lost control after the collision, veered off the roadway, and ultimately rolled into a nearby ditch.
Regrettably, the driver of the Tacoma, identified as 66-year-old Ronald Britton from Ōma’o, was pronounced dead at the scene. The authorities promptly closed down the highway in both directions for approximately two and a half hours to conduct a thorough investigation. Although speed and alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors, toxicology reports are still pending.
Later in the day, another unrelated crash occurred in ‘Ele’ele, where a motorcyclist, aged 46, sustained injuries. The incident took place at the junction of Kaumuali’i Highway and Waialo Road, as the motorcyclist lost control and collided with a curb. Fortunately, the injured individual was transported to the hospital and is currently in stable condition.
