Tragic Car Crash Claims Lives of Five Young People in Clonmel
In a devastating incident that sent shockwaves through the community, five young individuals died in a car crash in Clonmel. Zoey Coffey, Nicole Murphy, Grace McSweeney, all aged 18, and Grace’s 24-year-old brother Luke McSweeney were killed when the car they were traveling in collided with a wall and overturned.
The teenagers were on their way to celebrate their Leaving Cert results when the accident occurred. The joyous occasion quickly turned into a nightmare, leaving the town of Clonmel in a state of immense grief and loss.

Michael O’Loughlin, the principal of Presentation Secondary School, where Zoey and Grace were students, expressed the profound impact of the tragedy on the school and the entire town. He described the atmosphere as “covered in a cloud of sadness and devastation.” All schools in the area have been deeply affected by the loss.
“Our school community is in mourning today. No words can express our sorrow, pain, and grief,” O’Loughlin said. He paid tribute to Zoey and Grace, highlighting their outstanding academic achievements and vibrant personalities. Both girls had bright futures ahead of them and were eagerly looking forward to new adventures.

Grace McSweeney was described as a gentle and kind person who positively impacted everyone she encountered. She excelled not only academically but also in gymnastics and dancing. On the other hand, Zoey Coffey was known for her warm and vibrant personality. She was a diligent student who was popular amongst her peers and teachers and was actively involved in various aspects of school life.
Anne McGrath, the principal of Loreto Secondary School, where Nicole Murphy had attended, also expressed her grief and shock. She praised Nicole’s excellent Leaving Certificate results and described her as a beautiful student highly regarded by staff and students. Nicole was known for her kindness, wit, and loyalty.
The entire local community is now grappling with the unbearable grief and sense of loss. Yesterday’s celebrations have been replaced with an overwhelming sorrow that everyone feels. To support the students and their families, Loreto and Presentation Clonmel and other schools in the town opened their doors on Saturday.
The Minister for Education, Norma Foley, has pledged to provide psychological and other essential support to students and staff in the area over the coming period. The aim is to help them cope with the immense emotional impact of this tragedy.
