A suspect has been identified in a shootout that took place in Victorville on Friday afternoon, resulting in the death of the suspect and the injury of a sheriff’s sergeant. The incident occurred at a gas station located at 13660 Bear Valley Road, a major thoroughfare in Victorville.
Identification of the Suspect
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department has announced that the suspect involved in the shootout is 27-year-old Jorge Cardenas, a resident of Ontario. The incident unfolded when a sergeant responded to a 9-1-1 call at 1:43 p.m., reporting a man holding a gun at the gas station. The caller, who turned out to be Cardenas’ girlfriend, locked herself inside the bathroom of the business and informed the dispatch about the situation.
The Shootout
Upon arriving at the scene, the sergeant was met with gunfire from Cardenas. Despite being shot twice in the legs, the sergeant, a 16-year veteran of the department, managed to return fire. Fortunately, the sergeant’s injuries are not life-threatening, and he is expected to survive. However, Cardenas was fatally wounded and died at the scene.
Ongoing Investigation
An investigation is currently underway to determine the circumstances that led to the shootout. The Sheriff’s Department has already recovered a handgun believed to be used by Cardenas during the confrontation.
