Bengaluru: Two individuals were arrested by the Bengaluru police on Friday for allegedly shouting pro-Pakistani slogans during a T20 cricket match between India and Australia. The suspects, identified as Inayath, 28, and Syed Mubarak, 25, are residents of New Gurappana Palya in Bengaluru.
According to a police officer, the incident occurred at around 10:30 pm on Friday at the Mockaholic Pub located in the 1st Phase of JP Nagar. The pub had organized a live screening of the fourth T20 match between India and Australia when the incident took place.
As the match concluded, a customer at the Mockaholic Pub shouted “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” (Victory to Mother India), to which a group of three to four individuals at a nearby table responded with chants of “Pakistan Zindabad” (Long live Pakistan).
The pro-Pakistan slogans sparked a heated argument among other customers who objected to the chants. Amidst the commotion, two individuals managed to escape while Inayath and Mubarak were apprehended by patrolling police officers and taken to the police station.
The J P Nagar police have registered a case against the suspects under sections 505(2) and 153(a) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). These sections prohibit the publication and circulation of content that incites animosity or hatred between different groups, based on factors such as religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc.
