Baylor Mourns the Passing of Longtime History Professor Rufus Spain
We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Dr. Rufus Spain, a beloved and esteemed history professor at Baylor University. Dr. Spain passed away at the age of 100, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and excellence.
Dr. Spain’s remarkable career at Baylor spanned over five decades. He joined the faculty in 1957 and taught full-time until 1988. Even after retiring from full-time teaching, he continued to contribute as a part-time professor for ten more years. From 1998 to 2013, Dr. Spain led Baylor’s retired professors program, providing guidance and support to his fellow retired colleagues.
During his 56 years of service to Baylor, Dr. Spain made a profound impact on countless students and colleagues. His passion for history and his commitment to excellence in education were evident in every lecture and interaction.
