The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) has released new information regarding a fatal crash that took place at the intersection of East Platte Avenue and North Academy Boulevard. The victim has been identified as 24-year-old Mar’Layza West.
On October 28, CSPD responded to a collision involving two vehicles at the intersection. Preliminary investigations indicate that an SUV was traveling on North Academy Boulevard, attempting to make a left turn onto westbound East Platte Avenue. At the same time, a car was traveling southbound on North Academy Boulevard and entered the intersection. The two vehicles collided, resulting in one of the passengers in the SUV being ejected from the vehicle. Tragically, the ejected passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. Emergency personnel rushed the other occupants of both vehicles to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
CSPD has determined that speed played a role in the accident and it is now considered a factor in their ongoing investigation. To gather further evidence and understand the cause and circumstances of the crash, authorities are likely to analyze the speed of both vehicles involved.
Following the accident, the El Paso County Coroner’s office conducted an autopsy on the deceased passenger, confirming her identity as Mar’Layza West.
This incident marks the 45th traffic fatality in Colorado Springs this year. Comparatively, by this time last year, there were 49 traffic fatalities reported. Over the past 365 days, the city has witnessed a total of 50 traffic-related deaths.
