A man in Northwest Indiana was arrested after leading police on a high-speed pursuit while allegedly drunk. The man claimed he was trying to get to his girlfriend’s house. He was charged with resisting law enforcement, OWI, and reckless driving. Andy Koval reported
A man from Northwest Indiana was involved in a high-speed police pursuit early Saturday morning in an attempt to reach his girlfriend’s house. The incident occurred at approximately 5:05 a.m. when a Porter County Sheriff’s deputy noticed a gray Nissan traveling in the opposite direction at a dangerously high speed on US 30 near CR 500 W. The officer immediately activated the emergency lights and initiated a pursuit.
The chase quickly escalated, with the suspect’s vehicle reaching speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour in front of Deep River Waterpark on US 30. The pursuit continued into Lake County and eventually concluded near the intersection of US 30 and Utah Street. At that point, law enforcement officers apprehended the driver, identified as 23-year-old Andrew Chavez from Portage Township, at gunpoint and took him into custody.
During the arrest, Chavez revealed to the officer that his sole intention was to reach his girlfriend’s residence in Crown Point. In an attempt to provide context for his erratic behavior, Chavez admitted to consuming three alcoholic Monster Energy beverages approximately an hour before the incident.
As a result of his actions, Chavez is facing multiple charges, including resisting law enforcement, three counts of operating a vehicle while intoxicated (OWI), and reckless driving.
It is crucial to note that this incident serves as a reminder of the dangers associated with driving under the influence of alcohol. The high speeds reached during the pursuit put both the suspect and innocent bystanders at great risk. Law enforcement agencies continue to prioritize road safety and strive to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future..
