In Porter County, Indiana, a man from Northwest Indiana allegedly engaged in a drunken pursuit early Saturday morning with the intention of reaching his girlfriend’s house. The incident occurred at approximately 5:05 a.m. when a deputy from the Porter County Sheriff’s office noticed a gray Nissan traveling at a high rate of speed in the opposite direction on US 30 near CR 500 W. The deputy immediately activated emergency lights, initiating a police pursuit.
The chase quickly escalated, with speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour as they passed Deep River Waterpark on US 30. The pursuit continued into Lake County and eventually concluded near the intersection of US 30 and Utah Street. At that point, law enforcement officers pointed their guns at the driver, later identified as Andrew Chavez, a 23-year-old resident of Portage Township. Chavez was subsequently placed under arrest.
During the arrest, Chavez informed the officer that he was simply trying to get to his girlfriend’s house in Crown Point. He also admitted to consuming three alcoholic Monster Energy beverages approximately one hour prior to the incident, as documented by the police. As a result of his actions, Chavez is now facing charges of resisting law enforcement, three counts of operating a vehicle while intoxicated (OWI), and reckless driving.
Overall, this incident highlights the dangerous consequences of driving under the influence and the potential risks it poses to both the driver and others on the road. It serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible alcohol consumption and the need to prioritize the safety of oneself and others..
