Local Felon Arrested on Felony Firearm Charge after Shooting Himself in the Leg
Jimmy Javon Harris, a 28-year-old resident of Washington Street, was apprehended at National Park Medical Center on Saturday morning. The arrest followed an incident where Harris allegedly shot himself in the leg during a confrontation with his ex-girlfriend. He now faces a felony charge of possession of a firearm by certain persons, as well as misdemeanor charges of second-degree endangering the welfare of a minor and discharging a firearm in the city limits.
Harris was taken into custody shortly before 11:30 a.m. at the hospital, located at 1910 Malvern Ave. He was released later that night after posting a $6,500 bond. His court appearance is scheduled for December 19 in Garland County District Court.
According to court records, Harris had previously pleaded guilty to several charges, including residential burglary, possession of a controlled substance, drug fraud, theft by receiving, and theft of a firearm. As a result, he had been sentenced to 12 years in prison. However, he was later released on parole.
Confrontation and Shooting Incident
On Wednesday morning, Hot Springs police responded to a shooting incident reported at NPMC. Upon arrival, they discovered Harris and a woman inside a white 2021 Toyota Camry in the hospital’s parking lot. Harris had sustained a gunshot wound to his leg, which required immediate medical attention.
The woman, who identified Harris as her former boyfriend of a decade and the father of her child, provided details of the confrontation that led to the shooting. She explained that she had been dropping her son off at school on Main Street when she noticed Harris near the intersection of Sierra and Frieda streets.
Attempting to avoid any interaction, she drove away in her car, heading west towards Airport Road. However, Harris managed to enter the vehicle of a mutual friend who was also dropping off their children at the same school.
Inside the car, Harris requested a ride and started giving directions. When the ex-girlfriend stopped at the intersection of West St. Louis Street and Airport Road, the mutual friend pulled up alongside her. Seizing the opportunity, Harris got out of their vehicle and approached his ex-girlfriend’s car.
The woman tried to close her windows, but Harris managed to insert his hand through the front passenger window, open the door, and enter before she could secure the window. She demanded he leave and honked her horn in an attempt to draw attention.
At this point, Harris reportedly drew a handgun from his waistband and threatened to shoot himself unless she complied with his demands. Manipulating the firearm with both hands, he pointed it at his own legs and fired a single round.
It is worth noting that the woman’s 6-month-old daughter was present in the back seat during the incident. The mutual friend provided a corroborating statement to the police, confirming Harris’ actions and clarifying that he did not sustain any injuries while in their vehicle.
Following the shooting, Harris continued his threats, claiming he would shoot himself multiple times unless the woman drove him to his mother’s house on Washington Street. Once they arrived, he left the handgun outside the residence.
Subsequently, the woman drove Harris to NPMC, where he was admitted for medical treatment.
