Public Schools in Osogbo, Osun State Shut Down in Compliance with Labour Strike
In response to the directive of the Nigeria Labour Congress, several public schools in Osogbo, the capital city of Osun State, ceased operations on Tuesday. The Nigeria Labour Congress had called for an industrial action, and the schools adhered to this call by sending their students home. As a result, students who had already arrived at their respective schools were seen making their way back home around 9 a.m. Some of the areas where students were observed returning home include Stadium, Ayetoro, and West Bye pass in Osogbo.
However, upon visiting some schools in the city, it was noticed that teachers remained in their offices even after the students had been dismissed. Among the schools visited were Fakunle High School, Osogbo, Saint James Grammar School, and Adenle Grammar School, all located in the Ayetoro Area of Osogbo. Despite being present, the teachers declined to comment on the situation when approached.
Some teachers, who wished to remain anonymous, revealed that they had resumed work only to later be informed about the commencement of the strike by labour leaders. One teacher, simply identified as Johnson, stated that they couldn’t keep the students at school once the labour leaders instructed them to shut down operations. Although the students were released, many teachers remained on the premises.
Modupe Oyedele, the acting chairperson of Osun NLC, confirmed that workers in the state fully complied with the strike directive. She emphasized that Osun was in complete compliance with the strike directive.
Furthermore, an unusual presence of armed police operatives was noticed at various strategic points in Osogbo, indicating a measure taken to prevent any potential disruption of law and order. The police were stationed at Lameco Junction, Old Garage, and Olaiya Area of Osogbo. Despite their presence, economic activities in the visited areas continued without any hindrance.
