In Shelby County, Indiana, a man named Logan Childers has been charged with multiple felony counts of child neglect. The incident occurred when officers from the Shelbyville Police Department responded to calls reporting unsupervised children running around outside without any adults present. The officers arrived at the intersection of E. Pennsylvania Street and Noble Street, where they found four small children, as described by the callers, wearing only diapers. One of the officers had to protect one of the children from two dogs that were chasing it, and he had to fend off one of the dogs as it tried to bite.
Eventually, Childers came outside after hearing the officer shouting at the dog while holding one of the children. Childers claimed that the children were under his care, but he was simultaneously running around his yard and yelling at the dogs and the kids, blaming them for getting out. The officers decided to call the Department of Child Services (DCS) to conduct a wellness check on the children due to their improper attire and the cold temperatures outside.
Childers became angry when the officers told him about the call to DCS and started cursing and raising his voice. Additionally, officers noticed the smell of marijuana while interacting with Childers. He then told the officers that he did not live at the residence and was only there watching his two children, ages three and one. Childers claimed that he turned his head for just five seconds while the children left the home. However, another woman returned to the house and informed the officers that Childers and his two children were staying there with his girlfriend.
Further investigation led the officers to find two other males inside the home who were sleeping in different rooms, contradicting Childers’ earlier claim that nobody else was in the house. Throughout the encounter, officers had to repeatedly tell Childers to stop yelling and pacing back and forth. Eventually, they placed him under arrest and transported him to Shelby County Jail.
Childers now faces five felony counts of child neglect/endangerment, as well as charges of possession of marijuana and disorderly conduct. The officers also discovered a blue glass pipe containing burnt plant material believed to be marijuana, which Childers claimed was his. The residue from the pipe tested positive for marijuana.
In conclusion, the incident involved children being found outside wearing only diapers, dogs chasing them, Childers blaming the children and dogs for getting out, the involvement of DCS, the discovery of other individuals inside the house, and the arrest of Childers on multiple charges..
