In Markle, Indiana, law enforcement agencies are currently engaged in an ongoing search for a man who is believed to have murdered his 72-year-old grandmother. According to reports, deputies received a distress call on Sunday afternoon regarding a welfare check at a residence on E 300 S in Markle. Family members had expressed concern as they had not been in contact with the homeowner for several days. Upon arriving at the scene, officers made a gruesome discovery – the lifeless body of the elderly woman. It is suspected that she had been deceased for a significant period of time before being found.
The Huntington County Coroner has officially identified the victim as Bernice Eubanks, a 72-year-old resident of Markle. The cause of death has been determined to be multiple sharp force injuries, with the incident being classified as a homicide.
Following the discovery of the murder, authorities promptly issued an arrest warrant for 37-year-old Anthony Castleman on charges of murder. Court documents reveal that Castleman is the grandson of the victim and had been residing with her at the Markle residence. Alarming details emerged from the investigation, as the victim’s daughter contacted the police, reporting that she had visited her mother’s house and noticed numerous signs of disturbance. She observed a section of the rug had been cut out, subsequently finding the missing portion outside, behind the shed, stained with blood. Additionally, she discovered her mother’s purse in the driveway and an urn that had been shattered near the shed.
Further evidence implicating Castleman emerged during the investigation. Police discovered Eubanks’ body concealed beneath a carpet near a small barn, with multiple stab wounds. In close proximity, they also found several pieces of lattice. Notably, a wallet containing cards with Castleman’s name on them was recovered at the scene.
Providing further insight into Castleman’s suspicious behavior, his cousin informed law enforcement that he had visited his residence on Saturday, requesting bleach and assistance in cleaning up a mess. During this encounter, Castleman arrived in Eubanks’ car and was utilizing her cellphone. The cousin shared with the police that Castleman had made a statement suggesting that he would be “going to prison for a long time.”
When questioned by officers on Sunday evening, Castleman claimed to be in Lexington, Kentucky. However, he was unable to provide details regarding his whereabouts or the company he was keeping. Authorities caution the public not to approach Castleman if spotted, but to immediately contact 911 or Huntington County detectives at 260-356-2520.
