On the night of Deepavali, a heartbreaking incident unfolded in Ranipet district, Tamil Nadu, as a 4-year-old girl named Navishka lost her life.
Details of the Deepavali Tragedy
In the Mambakkam area of Ranipet district, Navishka was celebrating Deepavali with other children in the neighborhood. Unfortunately, during the festivities, firecrackers started falling on her one after another. This resulted in severe burn injuries all over her body as the flames caught onto her clothes. Immediately, she was rushed to a nearby hospital, but despite the medical team’s efforts, Navishka couldn’t survive the critical burn injuries she had sustained and passed away shortly after being admitted.
Doctors revealed that the burst of a firecracker had caused fatal injuries to Navishka’s chest and abdomen, leading to her untimely demise.
Chennai Police Takes Action Against Firecracker Violations
In the aftermath of Deepavali, the Chennai city Police has taken strict actions against those who violated the rules imposed by the Tamil Nadu government regarding firecracker usage. A total of 581 cases have been registered, with 554 of them being related to bursting firecrackers beyond the specified time frame set by the Supreme Court. Furthermore, eight firecracker shopkeepers have been booked for operating their shops in violation of the Tamil Nadu government’s regulations, and 19 individuals have faced legal action for using firecrackers that produce excessive noise.
Fire Incidents Reported in Chennai
As a result of firecracker usage, the state fire department reported 148 fire incidents in Chennai alone on Deepavali. The incidents included a fire at a godown in Vannarappettai, a shop in Periyamedu, a residential house in Kolathur, and the Mylapore Saibaba Temple. Fortunately, no major damages or injuries were reported, thanks to the swift response and effective firefighting efforts by the department.
