New details have emerged regarding the shooting death of a man who pointed a gun at Hall County deputies on Saturday, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. The incident took place in Flowery Branch, Georgia, where officers responded to reports of an assault at a residence on Samoa Way. A woman called 911 to report that she had been assaulted by a man inside her home and thrown down some stairs.
Upon arriving at the scene, deputies discovered that the situation was a domestic dispute. The man involved in the assault was identified as 57-year-old David James Umpmreyville. GBI officials reported that Umpmreyville was confrontational and refused to cooperate with the deputies. Despite the officials’ attempts to communicate with him, he remained inside the house and disregarded their requests.
In response to this standoff, Hall County SWAT was called in to assist. They positioned themselves strategically in order to safely remove Umpmreyville from the home. However, he emerged from the house completely naked, holding a handgun, and began firing multiple rounds into the surrounding woods. Although no deputies were hit by his gunfire, Umpmreyville continued to threaten the officials, stating that he would shoot at them if they attempted to remove him.
During the confrontation, Umpmreyville pointed his gun and fired at a deputy, prompting a member of the SWAT team to return fire. Fortunately, Umpmreyville was not struck by the officer’s bullet. Undeterred, he moved to another window in the house and pointed his gun directly at the deputies. In response to this immediate threat, a deputy fired their weapon, resulting in Umpmreyville’s death.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent investigation into the incident, and their findings will be presented to the Hall County District Attorney’s Office for review. This thorough examination aims to ensure transparency and accountability in the handling of the situation..
