In Nagpur, a speeding SUV collided with two vehicles, resulting in the death of a man and injuries to a mother and daughter. The SUV, driven by Akshay Choudhury, also flipped over after crashing into an electric pole near Sakkardara lake. Choudhury and a passenger in the SUV were also injured in the accident.
The victim of the collision was identified as Gaurav Raut, a 23-year-old laboratory assistant who was riding a bike at the time of the incident. The injured woman and her daughter were identified as Varsha Kharabe, 48, and Divyanshi, 22.
In another disturbing incident, a 48-year-old man named Babulal Mohankar was charged by the Airoli police for sexually assaulting a minor girl for approximately seven months. Shockingly, Mohankar even recorded a video clip of the assault and used it as his WhatsApp status. He had been exploiting the girl since March of this year and had also threatened to harm her family members. The crime came to light when a villager discovered the incriminating WhatsApp status and reported it to the authorities.
These incidents are just a few examples of the alarming rise in cases of sexual assault against minors in India. Recently, there have been other cases where perpetrators have been sentenced to lengthy prison terms for their heinous crimes. In Uttar Pradesh, a man was sentenced to 20 years in prison for raping a six-year-old girl. The court also found him guilty of attempted murder and imposed an additional 10-year sentence. The crime occurred in March 2017, and it took the young victim several months to recover from her injuries. The guilty party was also fined Rs 15,000, and the victim’s identity was kept confidential to protect her privacy.
In Bengaluru, a financier was also sentenced to 20 years in jail for raping a minor girl who had been held as collateral for a loan. The man’s sister was also convicted for attempting to intimidate the victim and conceal the crime. The girl’s father had borrowed money from the financier, and when he was unable to repay the loan, the man demanded that his daughter work as a domestic helper. The man then sexually assaulted the girl, and his sister threatened her to remain silent. Fortunately, the girl managed to escape and bravely filed a complaint against her perpetrators.
In another case from Uttar Pradesh, a 50-year-old man named Vinay Chaudhary was sentenced to 20 years in prison for kidnapping and raping a 13-year-old girl in Meerut. His accomplice, Komal, who worked as a housemaid, also received the same sentence. The survivor was given a drink laced with sedatives and taken to Haridwar, where the crime was committed. The victim only revealed the incident to her mother after two days. The court found both Chaudhary and Komal guilty and imposed a fine of Rs 42,000 on Chaudhary.
These distressing incidents highlight the urgent need for stricter laws, increased awareness, and stronger measures to protect minors from sexual abuse in India. It is crucial for society to stand up against such atrocities and ensure the safety and well-being of its most vulnerable members..
