Authorities in Sedgwick County, UK, are conducting an investigation into a tragic collision that claimed a life and resulted in an arrest.
According to Officer Kris Gupilan, police received a distress call regarding an injury collision at the intersection of E. 23rd St N and Jackson in Wichita at approximately 3 p.m. on Wednesday.
Upon arrival, emergency responders were met with a devastating sight – two vehicles severely damaged from the impact. Initial findings from the investigation indicate that a northbound Acura MDX and an eastbound Nissan Altima collided at the intersection of 23rd Street and Jackson.
The Nissan was occupied by two individuals – 28-year-old Nancy Lopez and a 23-year-old woman, both residents of Wichita.
Despite the valiant efforts of the Wichita Fire Department and Sedgwick County EMS, Nancy Lopez was tragically pronounced dead at the scene. The 23-year-old passenger was immediately transported to a local hospital, where she remains in critical condition.
The occupants of the Acura sustained minor injuries. The driver, a 16-year-old boy from Wichita, was subsequently arrested and taken into custody at the Sedgwick County Juvenile Intake Center. Authorities have requested charges of reckless 2nd Degree Murder and one count of Reckless Aggravated Battery against the young driver.
Based on preliminary investigations, excessive speed is believed to have played a significant role in causing the collision. The local police will present the case to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office for formal charging.
