A 46-year-old parolee at large and sex offender was arrested in Santa Monica after attempting to enter a home. The suspect had been caught on surveillance cameras at the same residence in previous months. He is facing charges of burglary and violation of his sex offender registration. Josh DuBose reported
A 46-year-old man, identified as Charles Marcell Newman, was captured and arrested in Santa Monica after being spotted trying to enter a home. The incident occurred on November 8th at around 3:27 a.m. when off-duty law enforcement officers providing private security for the homeowner noticed the man and called the police. When the police arrived, Newman was already being detained by security in the driveway of the residence.
Newman, who is currently homeless, is the subject of a burglary and trespassing investigation in Los Angeles. Surveillance cameras at the same Santa Monica residence captured him attempting to open doors, windows, and car-door handles in September and October. Detectives were able to identify him from the video footage and placed a warrant for his detention and questioning.
According to Lt. Erika Aklufi, the Santa Monica Police Department does not believe the family targeted by Newman was chosen for political reasons, and they do not believe he had any knowledge of the residents’ identity. This behavior of fixating on a specific residence and returning multiple times matches his previous arrests by the department.
Newman has a history of arrests, including burglary, resisting arrest, and violations of parole and probation. He has served prison time for these incidents. The police are presenting the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office and requesting charges of completed burglary, multiple attempted burglaries, and violation of his sex offender registration.
Newman is currently being held without bail for his parole violation and is scheduled to appear in court on November 13th. Anyone with information related to this individual or the investigation is encouraged to contact Detective Zamfirov or Detective Sergeant Lozano, or call the Santa Monica Police Department..
