Angela Montgomery, a 25-year-old woman from Rincon, Georgia, has been sentenced after being convicted of shooting a woman and kidnapping her six-week-old twin sons. The incident took place on May 11, 2021, when the Savannah police received reports of a person shot at a home on NE 36th Street. Upon arrival, they found Gabrielle Rodgers, a 23-year-old woman, who had been shot and was in critical condition. At the same time, Montgomery, identified as the suspect, had fled the scene with Rodgers’ twin boys, Matto and Lorenzo.
Thanks to tips received by the police, Montgomery was tracked to a home in Effingham County on St. Andrews Road. A joint operation involving the SWAT team, Rincon Police Department, and Effingham County Sheriff’s Office resulted in Montgomery’s arrest at 2:30 p.m. Thankfully, the twins were found unharmed at the home, but they were taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure.
Savannah Police Chief Roy Minter expressed relief that the twins were located quickly and were unharmed. He commended the efforts of the detectives, as well as the cooperation from the community, which played a significant role in resolving the case. Chief Minter also wished for Rodgers’ full recovery and reunion with her sons.
During the investigation, Montgomery claimed that she was helping her twin sister, who she did not have, and that the babies belonged to her sister. However, further investigation revealed that she had been communicating with mothers on Facebook and had arranged a meeting with Rodgers on the day of the incident.
Rodgers has since recovered from her injuries and is now back home with her two sons. As for Montgomery, she pleaded guilty but mentally ill to all charges. Her lawyer requested a mental health evaluation, and it remains unclear whether she will serve her sentence in a mental health facility or prison.
In terms of the sentencing, Montgomery received a 30-year prison term for criminal attempt to commit murder and aggravated assault. Additionally, she was sentenced to 20 years for each count of kidnapping, with concurrent life probation for both.
This case serves as a reminder of every mother’s worst nightmare and highlights the importance of swift action, collaboration between law enforcement agencies, and community support in ensuring the safety and well-being of individuals involved in such tragic incidents..
