Rescuers Recover Body of Man Buried in Flash Floods and Landslide in Indonesia
In the hilly village of Simangulampe on Indonesia’s Sumatra island, a tragic incident occurred when tons of mud, rocks, and trees came crashing down from a mountain due to heavy rainfall, triggering flash floods and a landslide. Rescuers have managed to recover the body of one man who was buried under this debris, but the search for 11 missing individuals is still ongoing.
Equipped with excavators, dogs, and sheer determination, the rescue team has been tirelessly sifting through the rubble in the worst-hit village. Their efforts have been further intensified with the deployment of divers equipped with sonar detection, as they explore the possibility of victims being swept into Lake Toba.
The devastating incident has resulted in extensive damage, with at least 35 houses, a church, a school, and a hotel being affected by the landslide and flash floods. As a result, approximately 55 families have been forced to seek shelter in a temporary government facility.
Indonesia is no stranger to such natural disasters, as the country experiences seasonal rain from October to March, which often leads to flooding and landslides. With its vast array of islands and a significant population residing in mountainous areas and fertile flood plains, the country is particularly susceptible to these calamities.
Located on Sumatra island, Lake Toba is a popular tourist attraction, covering an impressive area of 1,145 square kilometers. Formed from an ancient super volcano, this stunning natural wonder is one of the ten destinations in Indonesia that the government is aiming to promote as major attractions for international tourists.
