Reckless motorcyclists in India, driven by the desire for online attention, are engaging in dangerous stunts on public roads. One rider in Tamil Nadu was fined Rs 10,000 for riding recklessly with a unique helmet cover. Law enforcement is cracking down on these incidents with substantial fines. Prachi Ahluwalia reported
Reckless riding by motorcyclists in India has become a widespread issue, especially due to the influence of social media. Many riders, particularly young individuals who are seeking online attention, engage in dangerous stunts solely for the purpose of creating viral content. This alarming behavior has resulted in numerous accidents and even fatalities, as demonstrated by a recent incident in Tamil Nadu.
In a recent case, the Tamil Nadu police took decisive action when a youth, who was captured in a viral video, was seen riding recklessly while wearing a uniquely modified helmet. The individual in question, S Sujith from Malayan Street in Tenkashi, had decorated his helmet with fur-like material and rabbit-like ears, which is a peculiar trend that is gaining popularity among young riders.
These riders often share videos on their social media platforms, showcasing their riding skills or speed. Some even go to the extent of modifying their bikes to elicit reactions from other road users. However, Sujith took a different approach by drawing attention not to his bike modifications but to the distinctive helmet cover.
The Courtallam police received numerous complaints from the public regarding the reckless riding displayed in the viral video. Concerns were raised about the modified helmet being highly distracting to other road users. The actions of the rider were deemed a potential threat to both his own life and the lives of fellow road users.
Upon receiving the complaint, a senior police official instructed the Courtallam police to take immediate action. Through the analysis of CCTV footage, S Sujith was identified and subsequently fined Rs 10,000 for reckless riding and for using the unconventional helmet. Furthermore, his bike was seized as a deterrent.
These incidents have become increasingly common in recent times, driven by a desire for online attention. Social media influencers have been observed engaging in risky behaviors, such as sitting on the roofs or bonnets of moving cars. In response, law enforcement authorities have imposed substantial fines as a means of discouraging such dangerous activities.
Overall, the issue of reckless riding by motorcyclists in India, fueled by the influence of social media, continues to pose a significant threat to public safety. The actions of riders like S Sujith highlight the need for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and increased awareness regarding the potential consequences of such reckless behavior..
