Remembering Ed Mead: Founder of the George Jackson Brigade and Advocate for Prison History
We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Ed Mead, a prominent figure in the prison abolition movement. As the founder of the George Jackson Brigade and a former political prisoner himself, Mead dedicated his life to fighting for justice and advocating for the rights of incarcerated individuals.
His contribution to the Washington Prison History Project cannot be understated. Mead generously donated archival materials that have been instrumental in propelling the project into existence. Through his donations, the project has been able to shed light on the history of Washington’s prison system and the experiences of those within it.
Ed Mead’s legacy as a tireless activist and advocate for prison reform will continue to inspire future generations fighting for a more just and humane criminal justice system. His commitment to documenting and preserving the stories of those impacted by incarceration has left an indelible mark on the field of prison history.
Our thoughts are with Ed Mead’s loved ones during this difficult time. May his memory be a source of strength and inspiration as we continue the important work he began.
