GRAFTON, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Justice has identified the Ozaukee County sheriff’s deputy and armed suspect involved in a fatal shooting that occurred on November 2nd.
The incident took place in the town of Grafton, specifically near County Highway C and Lakefield Road, just east of I-43. According to the Wisconsin Department of Justice, the events began at approximately 11 a.m. when deputies attempted to apprehend the suspect, identified as 29-year-old Christopher Sewell, who had outstanding felony warrants.
The suspect fled the scene and a high-speed chase ensued, during which law enforcement deployed a tire deflation device in an effort to stop the suspect’s vehicle. Eventually, the fleeing car came to a stop on Lakefield Road, prompting the driver to flee into a nearby tree line with deputies in pursuit.

As the deputies approached the suspect, the Wisconsin Department of Justice reported that the suspect brandished a weapon. Subsequently, Deputy Michael Zilke, who possesses eight years of law enforcement experience, discharged his firearm, resulting in the suspect’s death. Lifesaving measures were attempted, but the suspect passed away at the scene. Authorities recovered a firearm from the incident site.
Fortunately, no law enforcement officers sustained injuries during the confrontation. It’s worth noting that the involved deputies were equipped with body cameras, ensuring that the incident was captured on video. As per agency policy, the deputy who fired the fatal shot has been placed on administrative assignment.
