Texas Man Hailed as Hero After Rescuing Injured Officer in Freeway Shootout
A Texas man with a history of encounters with the law is receiving praise for his heroic act in the midst of a freeway shootout, where he risked his own life to save an injured police officer. John Lally was driving on Houston’s Southwest Freeway on Saturday morning when he found himself in the middle of a fierce exchange of gunfire between a carjacking suspect and several police officers. Witnessing one officer, identified as 29-year-old Officer J. Gibson, being shot, Lally wasted no time in coming to his aid.
Lally recounted the incident, stating, “I just kind of ran over there and grabbed that guy with the other police officer… We grabbed him by his vest and dragged him behind the truck. And I kind of tucked him underneath the truck, so he wouldn’t get shot again.”
In a video captured by Lally, bullets can be seen flying past him as he bravely pulls Gibson across the freeway. Lally remained by Gibson’s side, offering comfort and support while waiting for paramedics to arrive.
This act of heroism is particularly remarkable considering Lally’s previous encounters with law enforcement. Houston Police Chief Troy Finner revealed that officers were pursuing a 19-year-old suspect who was allegedly driving a stolen car. The suspect crashed into multiple vehicles near Chimney Rock before exiting his car and opening fire on the police.
During a press conference held on Saturday afternoon, Chief Finner commended Lally for potentially saving Officer Gibson’s life. Officer Gibson, a five-year police veteran, was shot in the leg but is expected to make a full recovery.
“People make mistakes, but a truly reformed individual is a person that we can use. He stepped up and other citizens stepped up, and I don’t want that to get lost,” stated Chief Finner, emphasizing Lally’s contributions. The police department intends to formally express their gratitude to Lally for his heroic actions.
Despite his past encounters with law enforcement, Lally still holds a deep respect for police officers and would not hesitate to step up again if necessary. “I believe that we’re all here for a reason. I also believe that if you see somebody in dire need, it’s our job to help each other out,” Lally expressed.
The carjacking suspect, unfortunately, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital following the shootout.
