Texas Man Lauded as Hero for Rescuing Injured Officer in Houston Freeway Shootout
A man from Texas, who had previously encountered legal troubles, is being praised as a hero after he found himself amidst a dangerous shootout on a freeway and risked his own life to save an injured police officer.
John Lally was driving on Houston’s Southwest Freeway on Saturday morning when he unexpectedly became part of a crossfire between a suspect involved in a carjacking and several police officers. Witnessing Officer J. Gibson, aged 29, being shot, Lally wasted no time in rushing to his aid.
Lally recounted the incident, stating, “I hurried over there and assisted the other police officer in grabbing him… We held onto his vest and pulled him behind the truck. Then, I carefully positioned him underneath the truck to shield him from further harm.”
Lally captured the entire harrowing ordeal on video, which reveals bullets whizzing past him as he dragged Gibson across the freeway. Lally stayed by Gibson’s side, attempting to provide solace until paramedics arrived.
This remarkable turn of events is particularly significant for Lally, given his previous encounters with law enforcement.
Police Chief Troy Finner of Houston revealed that officers were pursuing a 19-year-old suspect who was allegedly driving a stolen vehicle. The suspect crashed into multiple cars near Chimney Rock before exiting his vehicle and initiating gunfire against the police.
Finner commended Lally for potentially saving Gibson’s life during a press conference held on Saturday afternoon. Officer Gibson, an experienced officer with five years of service, sustained a gunshot wound to the leg but is expected to make a full recovery.
Finner emphasized, “People make mistakes, but true reform is when an individual can be of use. Lally stepped up, and so did other citizens. We must not overlook that.”
The police department intends to extend formal appreciation and recognition to Lally for his heroic actions.
Despite Lally’s past encounters with the law, he continues to hold respect for police officers and affirms that he would not hesitate to step up again if needed.
He stated, “I firmly believe that we all have a purpose. If you witness someone in dire need, it is our duty to assist one another.”
Authorities confirmed that the carjacking suspect succumbed to his injuries at the hospital following the shootout.
