The police in Cornelia have confirmed that the death of a 72-year-old homeless man, James Roy Cantrell, is not believed to be the result of foul play. Cantrell’s body was discovered by police officers who were investigating a suspicious truck parked behind an abandoned restaurant. The officers had noticed the white Dodge Ram pickup truck parked behind the old Wolf Creek BBQ on North Main Street, which had been closed for several years. They suspected that someone may have been attempting to steal items from the nearby Mountain Automotive.
While searching the area, the officers did not find any signs of disturbance. However, their familiarity with the area led them to where Cantrell had been known to occasionally sleep. When they approached Cantrell and tried to speak with him, they realized he was unresponsive and not breathing. Despite their efforts to revive him, Cantrell was pronounced dead at the scene. The police called the Habersham County Coroner, as well as Cornelia firefighters and EMS for assistance.
Cornelia Police Chief Jonathan Roberts did not provide any details about the cause of Cantrell’s death. The Habersham County Coroner has been contacted for further information. Chief Roberts stated that the police’s Criminal Investigations Division is currently investigating the matter, but there is currently no evidence to suggest foul play as the cause of death.
