During an overnight chase in Tuscarawas County, one person was shot and another was arrested. The incident began when a trooper from the Ohio State Highway Patrol pulled over a 2014 Ford Explorer on I-77 near Strasburg for a turn signal violation. The vehicle exited the interstate and stopped at a gas station parking lot. Backup was called in, and as the rear-seat passenger exited the vehicle, it fled from the parking lot, leading to a pursuit.
The Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office deployed stop sticks at multiple intersections in an attempt to stop the vehicle. However, at the intersection of Blacksnake Hill Road and Schneiders Crossing Road, the suspect vehicle stopped briefly before accelerating towards two deputies. In response, one of the deputies fired their weapon, hitting the front seat passenger. The pursuit continued for a short distance until the vehicle eventually came to a stop on state Route 212.
The driver of the vehicle, identified as 43-year-old Carl E. Brown of Gnadenhutten, was taken into custody and charged with failure to comply and felonious assault. He was also found to have multiple arrest warrants and no valid driver’s license. The front seat passenger, who was struck by the deputy’s gunfire, was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Fortunately, no officers were injured during the incident. The investigation into the chase and the shooting is ongoing..
