Halifax County Sheriff’s Office has reported several incidents, including a drug bust where two individuals were arrested for possession of cocaine and drug paraphernalia. Additionally, a stolen dirt bike was recovered, leading to the arrest of one suspect, while a high-speed chase ended with the arrest of another driver. Enfield Police Department is also urging residents to report any crimes in the area. The Daily Herald reported
On November 11, Cpl. G. Martin of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office was on patrol in Halifax when he spotted a speeding vehicle. Cpl. Martin conducted a traffic stop and identified the driver and passenger. He then deployed his K-9, Loki, who alerted positive for illegal narcotics in the vehicle. Further investigation led to the discovery of Schedule II drugs and drug paraphernalia. The passenger, Lakeisha Parker, a 30-year-old woman from Roanoke Rapids, was charged with possession of cocaine and drug paraphernalia. She was given a $1,000 bond and a court date set for November 30. The driver of the vehicle received a citation for speeding.
Continuing on November 11, while patrolling Interstate 95, Cpl. G. Martin conducted another traffic stop with a vehicle that was exceeding the speed limit. The driver was identified as Antwaine Johnson, a 45-year-old man from Littleton. Further investigation led to a search of the vehicle, where a firearm and marijuana were found. Johnson was charged with speeding, possession of marijuana up to a 1/2 ounce, and possession of a firearm by a felon. He was given a court date of November 30 and was placed in the Halifax County Detention Center with no bond.
On November 9, the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a stolen dirt bike in the area of Ita Road in Hollister. The caller provided a description of the suspect’s vehicle, a white Chevrolet Trail Blazer pulling a small black trailer with a red and white Honda bike on it. Deputies responded to the area and used the Flock camera system to locate the Trail Blazer, which was registered to an address on Sycamore Street in Weldon. Deputy D. Bybee followed the vehicle to the registered address and conducted a traffic stop. The driver, identified as 26-year-old Prentis Anderson Jr. of Weldon, fled on foot upon being asked to step out of the vehicle. His female passenger, Shaniqwa Jones, who was the registered owner of the Trail Blazer, remained in the vehicle. Jones was arrested and charged with possession of a stolen motor vehicle and giving false information. She was placed in the Halifax County Jail with no bond and received a court date of November 14. Anderson has warrants out for his arrest for possession of a stolen motor vehicle, resisting arrest, and driving with a revoked license.
On November 10, Sgt. Sherrod responded to a call from a concerned citizen about a white minivan traveling at a high rate of speed on Interstate 95 near the 170-mile marker. Sgt. Sherrod attempted to stop the vehicle, driven by 38-year-old Scott Kercher of New Jersey, but Kercher refused to pull over and continued southbound at speeds exceeding 100 mph. The Nash County Sheriff’s Office set up spike strips at the Highway 64 interchange, causing Kercher to lose control of his vehicle and crash. Kercher was taken to UNC Nash for minor injuries and was subsequently arrested and charged with felony flee to elude, reckless driving, failure to heed lights and siren, failure to reduce speed, improper use of traffic lane, and exceeding the speed limit. He was placed in the Halifax County Jail with a $25,000 secured bond and received a court date of November 13.
In a Facebook post on November 9, the Enfield Police Department addressed recent crimes involving firearms in the community. They assured residents that they are actively investigating these matters and urged anyone with information to come forward.
