The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) in Chennai has made a significant arrest in a major drug smuggling operation. The suspect, Ian Jude Dawes, was apprehended at the airport after DRI officials received information about drugs being smuggled into Chennai from Bangkok. Dawes was found with 3.6kg of heroin, which is estimated to be worth Rs 25 crore.
The DRI had increased their surveillance at the airport in response to the tip-off. Dawes was intercepted by officials who discovered a secret compartment in his hand luggage. Inside the compartment, they found a white powdery substance that was later confirmed to be heroin through testing.
Authorities are now conducting further investigations to determine whether Dawes is connected to any major drug cartels. This arrest is a significant development in the fight against drug trafficking in the region.
In a separate incident, customs officers at the Chennai airport seized two kilograms of gold in paste form, worth Rs 1.25 crore, from two women who had arrived from Malaysia. The women, identified as Valli and Ayesha, were stopped and searched, leading to the discovery of the hidden gold under their attire. Customs officers suspect that the women were being used as couriers and are now working to identify others involved in the smuggling operation.
These recent arrests highlight the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies to crack down on illegal activities such as drug trafficking and gold smuggling. The authorities remain vigilant and committed to maintaining the security of the country’s borders..
