In Jadhavwadi, Pune, a man named Rohit Gawade (23) was apprehended by the Chikhali police on Saturday for attempting to snatch a woman’s gold chain. This incident comes after Gawade’s involvement in two recent gold chain snatching cases. The police successfully caught him while he was following a woman in Chikhali with the intention of stealing her gold chain. Upon his arrest, the police discovered two gold chains worth Rs40,000 that Gawade had robbed. The recovered chains were returned to their rightful owners.
Recent incidents of chain snatching have been reported in other parts of India as well. In Madurai, a youth named Stephen Raj, who was suspected of a chain snatching case, was shot by the city police. The officers attempted to arrest Raj based on a tip-off, but he allegedly attacked one of the officers with a knife. In self-defense, the police shot Raj in the leg, injuring him. He was then taken to the hospital for treatment.
In another incident in Pune, two conmen managed to dupe a 52-year-old woman and flee with her gold chain worth Rs92,000. The tricksters posed as gift bearers and diverted the woman’s attention by offering free gifts. They convinced her to place her gold chain in a bag, but instead, they tied it with a nylon rope and quickly escaped. The victim reported the theft to the police, who are currently investigating the incident.
With the festive season of Diwali approaching, the Chennai police have advised women to wear scarves around their necks to prevent chain-snatching incidents during Diwali shopping. To ensure public safety, temporary watch towers and additional CCTV cameras have been installed in crowded areas. Around 18,000 police personnel have been deployed to monitor offenders, and control rooms and help desks have been set up. Drones are being used for surveillance, and baggage is being randomly checked. Safety measures have also been taken in cracker shops, and special bus depots have been arranged for people traveling for Diwali celebrations.
