New details have emerged regarding the shooting death of a man who pointed a gun at Hall County deputies in Georgia, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. The incident took place on Saturday morning when officers received reports of an assault at a residence on Samoa Way in Flowery Branch. A woman called 911 to report that she had been assaulted by a man inside her home and thrown down some stairs.
Upon arriving at the scene, deputies attempted to speak with the man, identified as 57-year-old David James Umpmreyville. However, Umpmreyville displayed belligerent behavior towards the deputies and refused to come out of the house or comply with their requests. The situation was determined to be a domestic dispute.
In response to Umpmreyville’s non-compliance, the Hall County SWAT team was called to the scene. They positioned themselves to remove Umpmreyville from the home safely. However, when Umpmreyville exited the house, he was naked and armed with a handgun. He began firing multiple rounds into the surrounding woods, but did not hit any deputies.
Despite continued threats to shoot at officials if they tried to remove him from the home, Umpmreyville then pointed his gun directly at the deputies through a window in another part of the house. In response to the imminent threat, a deputy fired their weapon, resulting in Umpmreyville’s death.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has launched an independent investigation into the incident. The findings will be presented to the Hall County District Attorney’s Office for review.
