A Cleveland man was apprehended by the police after a pursuit in Parma on Thursday night, resulting in injuries to a 70-year-old man. This incident has angered the residents of Old Brooklyn, as they have experienced multiple pursuits and crashes in their neighborhood recently.
According to a news release from the Parma Police Department, the incident occurred around 8:18 p.m. on November 9. A 1999 Honda Civic was spotted by an officer driving north on Peal Road near Ridge Road. The officer noticed several equipment violations and decided to initiate a traffic stop.
The Honda driver complied and pulled into a McDonald’s on Pearl Road. However, instead of stopping, the driver circled the restaurant and then exited back onto Pearl Road, continuing to drive north. The officer pursued the vehicle, and the chase eventually led them to State Road in Cleveland. It was here that the Honda collided with a 2003 Buick Century. The driver of the Honda then abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot, ignoring the officer’s commands to stop. He ran north on the east sidewalk of Pearl Road, seeking cover between buildings. However, his attempt to escape was thwarted when he tripped and fell. The pursuing officer quickly caught up to him and placed him under arrest.
The driver was later identified as a 33-year-old man from Cleveland. Both Cleveland EMS and Cleveland Police officers were called to the scene to provide assistance. The arrested driver, his 40-year-old female passenger, and the 70-year-old driver of the Buick were all taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The Parma Police stated that the case would be forwarded to the Cuyahoga County Grand Jury for further charges.
News 5, a local news outlet, decided to investigate this incident after previously reporting on a crash involving the Parma Police in August. In that incident, a woman was severely injured and her dog died after being hit head-on by a wrong-way driver on I-76. The police had been chasing the other vehicle, but the pursuit was terminated when the officer lost sight of it.
The frustration of the residents of Old Brooklyn is evident, as they demand answers and action. One resident, Carl Schanz, expressed his concerns about the safety of the neighborhood sidewalks, which are only five feet away from the street.
