Kenya Army Soldiers Detained after Bar Explosion
Two soldiers from the Kenya Army have been apprehended at Chebole trading center in Sotik, Bomet County. The police are currently conducting an investigation into an explosion that occurred at a local bar on Saturday night.
The incident was reported to the Matarakwa Police Post under Occurrence Book no. 8/10/11/2023 at approximately 8:50 pm. The individuals identified as Private Alphonse Rotich and Peter Kibet were taken into custody at Daima bar and restaurant following the explosion at Chebole trading center.
The arrest was made after a village elder named Noah Kimutai heard two loud explosions at the trading center, which he believed were gunshots.
Upon arriving at the scene, the police discovered two grenade pins, suspected to be from the previously detonated grenades, along with a black bag containing four NF24 48mm sound grenades and personal belongings belonging to Rotich.
The authorities have revealed that Rotich, who is stationed at the 21KA in Nyanyuki, was on a weekend off, while Kibet from 17KA based in Modika Garissa was on leave.
The motive behind the soldiers’ actions remains unclear. Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and the Anti-Terror Unit have been summoned to interrogate the two soldiers.
Currently, they are being held at Mutarakwa Police Post under strict security measures. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the explosion.
