Kenya Army Soldiers Arrested After Bar Explosion in Bomet County
Two Kenya Army soldiers, Private Alphonse Rotich and Peter Kibet, have been taken into custody as the police investigate an explosion that occurred at a bar in the Chebole trading center on Saturday night. The incident was reported at the Matarakwa Police Post under Occurrence Book no. 8/10/11/2023 at approximately 8:50 pm.
A village elder named Noah Kimutai alerted the police about two loud explosions, which he believed to be gunshots, at the trading center. Upon arrival at the scene, the police discovered two grenade pins suspected to be from the exploded grenades, as well as a black bag containing four NF24 48mm sound grenades and personal belongings belonging to Rotich.
Rotich, who serves in the 21KA stationed in Nyanyuki, was on a weekend off, while Kibet, from the 17KA based in Modika Garissa, was on leave. The motive behind their actions remains unclear at the moment, prompting the involvement of detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and the Anti-Terror Unit for further interrogation.
The two soldiers are currently being held at the Mutarakwa Police Post under tight security. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the explosion.
