Four suspects have been arrested in connection with the theft of 94.9 million Kenyan shillings from a transit cash van in Nairobi. The police have recovered 9.1 million shillings and are working to apprehend the remaining culprits and retrieve the remaining stolen cash. Capital News reported
Four suspects have been arrested in connection with a daring heist of Sh94.9 million transit cash in Nairobi. The arrests were made by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) during an intelligence-led operation that involved multiple security teams. The DCI announced on Sunday that they had recovered Sh9.1 million of the stolen cash so far.
The incident occurred on November 6 when employees of Wells Fargo company, who were responsible for transporting the day’s collection for Quickmart supermarket to Family bank, stole the Sh94.9 million. One of the suspects, Ismael Patrick Gitonga, was identified as the owner and driver of the motor vehicle that was used to transport the stolen cash from the escort van. He was apprehended in the Rongai area, and the motor vehicle was traced to Njiru in Kayole.
In Njiru, two additional suspects, Michael Matolo Njeru and Samwel Onyango, were arrested while allegedly modifying the suspect motor vehicle to conceal its identity. Another suspect, Martin Nderi Nganga, was apprehended in the TRM area within Kasarani, and a recovery of cash amounting to Sh9,101,300 was made at his rented house. Additionally, an empty cash box was found in a forest near Gataka market in Karen, where it is believed the stolen cash was shared by the suspects.
The DCI mentioned that Crime Scene Investigators from the Nairobi Region processed all the scenes related to the heist. Efforts are currently underway to trace, arrest, and recover the remaining stolen cash.
