According to the bus driver, Renante Piega, 40, from Barangay Suba, Samboan, he stated in an interview with SunStar Cebu that the foreigner was following closely behind him when he suddenly fell. Piega claimed that he alone was accused of hitting the victim due to his proximity. He suggested that the foreigner may have lost balance after encountering a sandy road that had recently been reduced from four lanes to two lanes as part of an ongoing road widening project.
Piega vehemently denied striking the victim and fleeing the scene. He asserted that he stopped the bus a few meters away from the accident site and questioned his passengers about the incident. They all responded negatively, affirming that he had not hit anyone. Thus, Piega continued his journey.
Upon receiving the report about the incident, the Dalaguete police, led by Major Clemente Ceralde Jr., swiftly set up a roadblock and intercepted the bus driver in front of the municipal hall. Subsequently, Piega was handed over to the Argao Police Station for further investigation.
