A suspect involved in the infamous January 6 attack on the United States Capitol has turned themselves in to the authorities in New Jersey. The suspect, identified as Gregory Yetman, had fled his residence in Helmetta when FBI agents arrived to arrest him, but eventually surrendered without incident in Monroe Township on Friday morning. Monroe Township is situated near Yetman’s home, approximately 43 miles south of New York City. Details of his surrender, such as whether he had legal representation, remain undisclosed. Furthermore, attempts to seek comment from Yetman through his home phone were unsuccessful.
Gregory Yetman faces a string of charges, including assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers, obstructing law enforcement during civil disorder, entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds, engaging in physical violence in a restricted building or grounds, and committing an act of physical violence in the Capitol grounds or buildings, according to the FBI.
In an earlier report by USA Today, it was revealed that Yetman, a former military police sergeant in the New Jersey National Guard, had been interviewed by the FBI regarding his involvement in the riot. He is suspected of deploying pepper spray against protesters and police officers during the event. Yetman, however, vehemently denies any wrongdoing at the Capitol and refutes the allegations of pepper-spraying individuals.
Since the Capitol riot, over 1,200 people have been charged with federal crimes related to the incident. Of those, more than 800 have either pleaded guilty or been convicted after trial by a judge or jury. Over 700 individuals have already been sentenced, with approximately two-thirds receiving prison sentences ranging from three days to 22 years.
