In an incident that took place on Tuesday night, a man shot at a mugger inside a subway station in New York City, according to authorities. The shooting occurred on the northbound platform of the 49th Street station located in Midtown Manhattan, just after 9 p.m. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident.
According to the NYPD, the shooter opened fire on a man who was attempting to rob a 40-year-old woman. However, the shot missed the would-be robber. The accused mugger has been identified as 49-year-old Matthew Roesch and has been taken into custody on charges of attempted robbery.
The shooter fled the scene but was apprehended by the police on Wednesday. The suspect, identified as John Rote, 43, from Queens, has been charged with multiple offenses, including criminal possession of a weapon, reckless endangerment, criminal possession of a firearm, and menacing, as stated by the NYPD.
In response to the incident, NYC Transit President Richard Davey expressed strong disapproval of the shooter’s actions, referring to him as a “vigilante.” Davey made it clear that such behavior is not tolerated within NYC Transit. He commended the NYPD for swiftly making an arrest and emphasized the importance of the recorded surveillance footage. He further conveyed relief that no one was harmed but condemned the outrageous, reckless, and unacceptable nature of the incident.
