Man Fatally Shot by Escondido Police Identified as Douglas Quinn
A man who was fatally shot by Escondido police after allegedly opening fire on officers at a mobile home park in a neighborhood south of Daley Ranch has been identified as Douglas Quinn, a 48-year-old parolee from Indiana. The San Diego Police Department, which is handling the investigation, released this information regarding the incident.
Officers Involved in Shooting Identified
The officers involved in the shooting have been identified as Anthony Lay and Michael Statti. Anthony Lay has been working with the Escondido Police Department for six years, while Michael Statti has been serving as a patrol officer for one year.
This tragic event began unfolding at around 6:30 a.m. on Friday when the Escondido police received a report of a trespasser sleeping on the porch of a residential trailer in the 2500 block of East Valley Parkway, according to the San Diego Police Department.
Details of the Incident
Upon receiving the report, the Escondido police officers were informed that the man had woken up and was seen pushing a blue motorcycle through the mobile home complex. The two officers arrived at the trailer park approximately 10 minutes later and approached Quinn for questioning.
During the interaction, the officers discovered that Quinn had a felony warrant for a parole violation out of Indiana. As they attempted to detain him, he suddenly turned and started to run while reaching into his waistband,” said SDPD Lt. Jud Campbell.
Shooting Occurs
According to the police, the suspect then pulled out a gun, pointed it at the officers, and opened fire. In response, the patrol personnel returned fire, injuring Quinn. He fell to the ground but allegedly continued to point his gun towards the officers, prompting one of them to fire several more rounds at him.
Despite the officers providing first-aid to the wounded suspect before paramedics arrived, Quinn was pronounced dead at the hospital. Fortunately, no officers or bystanders were injured during the exchange of gunfire.
Following the investigation by the SDPD Homicide Unit, the county District Attorney’s Office will review the findings to determine if the officers will face any charges. The Escondido Police Department will also conduct an administrative investigation into the officers’ use of firearms. Additionally, the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office will be monitoring the investigation.
