In Blacksburg, Virginia, a tragic incident occurred, resulting in the untimely death of a young individual named Serenity Hawley. It has been reported that Serenity was shot and killed by her ex-boyfriend, who later took his own life. This devastating event has left her loved ones in disbelief and mourning.
According to Serenity’s mother, Blacksburg High School had previously issued a no-contact order between the two teenagers, and she had advocated for a restraining order. The fact that these precautions were taken highlights the concerns and red flags that were present in their relationship.
Laura Beth Weaver, the executive director of the Women’s Resource Center of the New River Valley, emphasized the importance of recognizing warning signs in relationships. This includes behaviors such as exerting control over decision-making, dictating what one’s partner wears or eats, and disregarding boundaries. Weaver also pointed out that while the CDC reports that 1 in 12 students experience physical dating violence, this statistic does not account for the emotional, financial, and exploitative aspects of abusive relationships.
Weaver stressed that the key difference between healthy, unhealthy, and abusive relationships lies in the power dynamics. When one person maintains power and control over another’s behavior and choices, it can lead to a dangerous and abusive situation. This imbalance of power can occur early on in relationships and is not limited to married couples.
In the wake of this tragic event, Weaver urges the community to seek help when needed and to normalize accessing support from safe adults. It is crucial to break the silence surrounding domestic violence and encourage individuals to reach out for assistance.
To assist those in need, a list of domestic violence resources has been provided. These include the National Domestic Violence Hotline, TAP (Total Action for Progress), Salvation Army of Roanoke’s Turning Point shelter, SARA (Sexual Assault Response and Awareness), and the Women’s Resource Center.
Additionally, resources for children and young adults dealing with feelings of grief are available to support them during this difficult time.
This heartbreaking incident serves as a reminder of the importance of recognizing and addressing warning signs in relationships, promoting a culture of support and safety, and seeking help when it is needed the most..
