Long Beach Police Department Investigating Officer-Involved Shooting in Los Angeles
The Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) in California is currently conducting an investigation into an officer-involved shooting incident that took place on November 8, 2023.
Stabbing Call Leads to Officer-Involved Shooting
At approximately 8:57 a.m., LBPD officers responded to a distress call reporting a stabbing incident in the 300 block of 69th Way. According to information provided by dispatch, the suspect had stabbed his mother, an adult female victim, who had sought refuge in a room with another uninjured family member.
Upon their arrival at the scene, the officers encountered the male adult suspect inside a residence, armed with a knife. They immediately instructed the suspect to drop the weapon, but he disregarded their commands and began advancing towards the officer while raising the knife. Consequently, an officer-involved shooting occurred.
Preliminary findings indicate that the suspect had already inflicted non-life-threatening injuries on the victim prior to the officers’ arrival at the scene.
Medical Assistance and Fatality
Emergency medical personnel from the Long Beach Fire Department swiftly arrived at the location and transported both the suspect and the victim to a nearby hospital. Tragically, it was later discovered that the suspect, identified as 38-year-old Eriberto Penaloza, a resident of Long Beach, had sustained stab wounds to his upper body and succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical treatment. The victim, on the other hand, was also transported to a local hospital for treatment of her non-life-threatening injuries.
Homicide Detectives Take Over Investigation
Homicide detectives have assumed responsibility for the investigation into this incident. In order to gather comprehensive evidence, the LBPD is currently reviewing the footage captured by the officers’ body-worn cameras. The department aims to make this footage available to the public as soon as possible.
Comprehensive Review and Independent Investigation
Following standard protocol for officer-involved shooting incidents, the LBPD will conduct a thorough evaluation of the entire incident at various levels.
