Tevis Walker, a 34-year-old maintenance man, has been formally charged with the murder of a 15-year-old girl in Indianapolis. He appeared in court, where a judge ordered him to be held without bond until his trial. The prosecutors allege that Walker shot and killed the girl, named Janiya Carr, on October 28th and left her body in a tree line behind an apartment complex. The discovery of Carr’s body was made on November 1st by a woman walking her dog near an apartment building. The body had a bullet wound to the right cheek and trauma to the back of the head. Investigators found blood on the ground and drag marks at the scene.
Carr had been reported as a runaway since October 28th. Surveillance video from the apartment complex and various locations along the street helped investigators piece together a timeline of events. The footage showed Carr leaving her apartment building around 4 a.m. and getting into a Kia sedan registered to Tevis Walker around 4:30 a.m. Walker, who worked as a maintenance man at the apartment complex and lived on the property, was seen driving the Kia with Carr. The car left the complex and returned less than an hour later. At 5:21 a.m., the same car was observed driving into the grass behind Walker’s apartment building, where Carr’s body was later found.
Detective Jeremy Ingram, from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, stated that the lights of the vehicle went off, and although movement was visible, the view was not clear. Ingram further reported that Walker was seen walking to a dumpster multiple times from his vehicle and appeared to place something in the trunk before going inside his apartment building. Walker claimed that he picked up a female on Newburgh Drive that night, drove her several miles east to buy an iPad, but she didn’t show up with the iPad, so he returned her to Newburgh Drive.
Walker was arrested on November 2nd during a traffic stop and had active warrants for drugs and a handgun offense. His next court date is a pretrial hearing scheduled for February 20, 2024, followed by a jury trial on February 26th. The motive behind the killing has not been disclosed by the police..
